When bombs were dropped across the globe as part of a world-wide agreement to cull the human population, the aftershocks triggered unbelievable horrors. Fallout from radiation and pressure waves caused disfigurements and mutations: inorganic matter melding with flesh, human and animal compressing into one, grotesqueries crawling across the blasted landscape, condemned as outcasts forever.

But there is hope. Rumours abound of the Surgeon, the one person who can cure the afflicted, cut out that which has invaded the body. Yet when Orla and her brother, Silas, succeed in tracking him down, they discover he is not exactly what they imagined …

When the world threatened to end, a select few went into an underground complex and left those above to survive any way they could. Scientist Faith Hamilton and her grown daughter Josie are two of the abandoned. A Barricade around the entrance to the bunker ensures those below would never be allowed out.

Twenty years later they start hearing strange voices, seeing shadows within. Those below start to appear in the inner circle of the Barricade asking to be let out. Those above still refuse. Faith and her friends discover it hasn’t isolated them as they thought, that in fact there has been communication and manipulation by those underground all this time.

A terrifying pandemic sweeps the world, rendering its victims completely immobile but leaving them conscious with their minds intact. The victims are helpless against the environment, completely at the mercy of wild animals, weather, out of control fires, and other dangers. There’s no hope for those safe in their homes either, as they slowly starve to death, unable to feed themselves or drink.

Dr. Alex Griffiths leads a team racing against time to find a cure before it’s too late. Will he succeed?
